Se trata de uno de los músicos de jazz que más activos e influyentes han sido de forma permanente a lo largo de su carrera. Heredero de John Coltrane, su música se encuadra dentro del post-bop, habiendo realizado aportaciones fundamentales al desarrollo del hard bop, del jazz modal y de la fusión, añadiendo incluso en sus últimos discos un toque funk.

La influencia de Shorter en muchos de los artistas que surgieron en los 80 (como, por ejemplo, en Branford Marsalis) ha sido considerable sobre la base de su trabajo de los años 60 y 70.

Experto tanto en el saxo soprano como en el tenor, Shorter suena diferente según toque uno u otro. Con el saxo tenor suena estricto y cerebral, mientras que con el soprano se vuelve más lírico y sensible.

Como compositor es conocido por sus melodías cuidadosamente concebidas, complejas y extensas, muchas de las cuales se han convertido en estándares del jazz.
