Amy Ray , nacida en Decatur, Georgia , conoció a Emily Saliers cuando ambas asistían a la misma escuela primaria. Comenzaron a actuar juntas y grabaron una demostración en 1981. Después de graduarse, Ray y Saliers fueron a diferentes universidades con Ray asistiendo a la Universidad de Vanderbilt . En 1985, ambas mujeres se habían transferido a la Universidad de Emory en Atlanta y formaron las Indigo Girls. En 1986, Ray se graduó de Emory con especializaciones en inglés y religión.
En marzo de 2001, Ray lanzó su primer álbum en solitario, Stag , un álbum sureño y punk rock. The Butchies , una banda de punk cuyos miembros incluyen a Kaia Wilson , Melissa York y Alison Martlew , brindaron apoyo para cinco canciones, y Joan Jett tocó en "Hey Castrator". En abril de 2005, Ray lanzó Prom ,de borde más suave , y en diciembre de 2006, lanzó Live from Knoxville .
