Altan es un grupo irlandés de música folclórica y tradicional, originario de Gweedore, República de Irlanda.
La banda comenzó como un dúo, en 1981, tocando en pubs del condado de Donegal, provincia del Ulster, República de Irlanda. En el mismo condado se encuentra el lago al que debe su nombre la banda, «Altan», detrás de la montaña de Errigal. Los fundadores y únicos dos integrantes en ese entonces, eran el flautista de Belfast, Frankie Kennedy, y la cantante y violinista de Gweedore, Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh.
Su repertorio era la antigua música tradicional de Donegal para violín, pero ellos le incorporaron arreglos para flauta. Aquella música tradicional, por ese tiempo, era poco conocida fuera de Donegal.
No fue sino hasta el año 1984 o 1985 que se produjo un cambio decisivo en Altan, cuando Frankie y Mairead decidieron dejar sus trabajos de profesores para dedicarse sólo a la música. El dúo se había afianzado en esos años. Habían actuado en festivales en toda Irlanda, pero también en pubs irlandeses y en clubes nocturnos de Nueva York, Minnesota, Madison, Portland y Seattle, estos últimos junto con un viejo amigo y guitarrista residente en Minnesota, Daithi Sproule. Éste contribuyó en gran medida al desarrollo de la música tradicional, siendo uno de los primeros en adaptar la guitarra a las viejas canciones gaélicas.
De los músicos que se incorporaron definitivamente a Altan, los primeros fueron Ciaran Curran, sobrino del violinista Ned Curran y ejecutante del bouzouki; Ben Lennon, violinista; Cathal MacConnell, flautista (de Boys of the Lough), todos ellos amigos de Frankie y Mairead. Finalmente, con la inclusión del guitarrista Mark Kelly a mediados de los 80, Altan se convirtió en una banda. Mark, en mayor medida que los demás músicos, ya había incursionado en otros géneros musicales como el jazz, blues, rock, country y clásico; su aporte le dio a la banda otro sonido y nuevos arreglos.
