Nació en Nueva York y se crió en Boulder, Colorado , pero se mudó a Nashville a finales de 1980. Allí encontró trabajo como compositora, componiendo éxitos para Martina McBride , Etta James , Trisha Yearwood , Patty Loveless , George Strait , así como cantantes de rock Neil Diamond y co-escribiendo canciones con Bryan Adams .También ganó la Asociación de Música Country Canción del Año por la "McBride Independence Day "en 1995.
